Balfours financial problems elsewhere won't help the final contract settlement negotiations.

Balfour’s bill for Olympic Stadium could rise by £50mGrant Prior | Fri 17th October | 7:11
inShare.0 Balfour Beatty is believed to be asking for an extra £50m to complete the Olympic Stadium conversion contract.
The Enquirer understands that the figure was discussed at a meeting this week between the contractor and the stadium authorities.
Problems were discovered with the steel work on the stadium roof last month.
The job is believed to be back on schedule but Balfour is asking for more cash because of extra resources needed and the technical complexity of the project.
A source close to the negotiations said: “There have been a number of meetings and the running theme is that Balfour wants more money to complete the project on time.
“The end price they are looking for is around £200m.”
Balfour won the job to convert the stadium into a new home for West Ham United football club with a bid of £154m.
An E20 Stadium LLP spokesperson said: ““The project still has close to two years to run and we are in no doubt Balfour Beatty can deliver the programme as planned.
“This is a complex project and there are always ongoing discussions about specific elements within it.”
The stadium will host five matches during the Rugby World Cup next year and will be the permanent home of West Ham from 2016.

Balfour beatty are in a massive downfall, dont be surprised if another contractor takes their place. hearing Mace are primed to takeover the conversion works

The British construction industry is addicted to 'claims' for cost overruns (caused by low-balling and then treating every minor change as a cost).
Except John Laing, who used to the the largest construction firm in the country until they failed to read the Millennium Stadium contract and had to absorb the costs themselves.

Speaking to a mate of mine in construction last night he said the price of materials was rocketing. He said even the reclaimed bricks he needed for a job in a conservation area cost 2-3 each and he needed 1500 of them.
People will be knocking down walls and stealing them soon at that rate.

I dont get how things cost so much in this country. my daughter's school has just had an extension done on the side, which is barely 10ft wide, by about 50 ft long.

I have a MATE who does some dealings with Balfour Beaty... told me they are in a right old mess.... had some trouble shooter they got in that has just walked away...

Very funny how - if nobody complained the increased costs would probably have been our responsibility.
Now because we are a tenant we don't have to fork out.

Their bid was on a set price contract and they also won based on this.
If there are fundamental problems with the existing frame work, then you expect this will be taken up with the previous contractors.
They won't get nay more money from the tax payer.
If the job came in at £50m under, do you really think they would announce this and give the money back? No. As they are working to a fixed price contract.
The company itself is in a shambles due to this sort of bidding, under cutting rivals massively to win business, but struggle to deliver. The web is full of this from Balfour Beatty.

It's an inovative design, and assumptions will of been made with the engineering yet to be completed, costs were always going to rise tbf.

generally the tender information is issued and you submit a price for that job.
However on all projects there are variations to the contract which will incur costs.
Its then for the client and contractor to argue who is responsible for these changes and take the financial hit.
